I have been exploring the world of rhythm for over 60 years. Having grown up in my father's dance studio, I heard the language of tap before I could speak. I was also exposed to the rhythms of the Tango, Cha Cha Cha, and samba ballroom styles. The music used for these dance forms contained rhythms not from our culture; this was my introduction to the outside world. My first instrument was my body. Inside of any dance form, you work with spatial relationships; but as a tap dancer, you not only create percussive rhythm through the movement of your body, you do it while putting yourself into synchronized time.
